New Year Review

There were a lot of things I wanted to post before the new year,but thanks to a couple of things I was unable to. Chief among those things was Skyrim... every time I start playing I try to play for an hour so, but by the time I look at a clock it's been hours. The game's great but I'm starting to see dragons and bandits everywhere, even in clouds. So, time permitting I'll try to post my 2011 best of lists: TV, Movies and Comics.

As for 2012, I don't have many resolutions... most are inward and existential (I could go into them, but I'm sure it'd bore the hell out of you.) I do resolve to blog more, and I'm I fine a nie enough camera I may even start vlogging (I'll try not to do those stupid quick cuts and green screen effects.)

This is all contingent on the world not coming to an end... pesky Mayans and their prophecies.

Did Community's Christmas Save the Show?

So the last episode of Community on NBC's came on last Thursday and took a swipe at musical episodes. It was obvious that the show was making fun of Glee, as well as holiday themed episodes. Community has gotten really good at lampooning popular culture, as well as lampoon tv elements that have become commonplace (bottle episodes, mockumentary style single-camera comedies, and now musical themed episodes.) The question I guess is was this episode funny enough to save Community?

The dialog was as witty and goofy as ever, and the musical numbers were funny and satirical. For instance Annie, the Jewish member of the study group, dresses up as a scantly-clad Santa Claus to seduce Jeff into joining the Glee Club.

Troy the resident Jehovah's Witness, unable to celebrate Christmas because of religious belief raps out a plan to infiltrate Christmas.

I really hope Community get's a reprieve, it is one of the funniest shows on television; they are doing avant-garde jokes that may go over some people's heads, while other show remain content low balling it in with dick and fart jokes. The past few years have been odd when it comes to television. Some shows are allowed to flourish while it's obvious they've lost their edge, other shows are cancelled before they are able to find their legs. I'm surprised the show has lasted this long but I honestly believe it could go for six seasons or more, like The Office or 30 Rock, if NBC allows them too.

Just cancel Whitney already... it's not even that good.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Trailer Mashups

Now I'm on the fence when it comes to remakes of foreign films, this year we're getting a Hollywood adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Over the past few months people have been taking the trailer for the movie, which features Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Trent Reznor doing a cover of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song, and making mashup trailers for other movies in that same style. The new season of the Naptown Rollergirls roller derby is upon us. They've returned from nationals just in time for a bout against the Ohio Roller Girls. This one will be a treat for Star Wars fans too, the 501st Bloodfin Garrison will be making an appearance at the bout. I've seen them in the past, they spare no expense in the level of detail in their costumes. They make appearances at many local events, and this time they'll be appearing along with the roller girls. I've become a big fan of the NRG as has my buddy Ewzzy. Here's a video he took at Monumental Mayhem, the roller derby regional tournament hosted by the NRG:

Community's not on the Midseason Schedule

That's what I said when I saw the news that Community was not on NBC's midseason schedule. Freshman comedy Whitney will be moving to Wednesday nights and 30 Rock will be taking Community's place, up against ratings juggernaut The Big Bang Theory. Instead of shifting Community's time slot to 9:30, Up All Night will be moving there after The Office. Does this announcement serve as a possible death-nail for one of the funniest shows on TV? There's no denying that Community pushes the comedy envelope with it's avant-garde style, is that the reason why it's not in the rotation? Or, is NBC just giving show runners the opportunity to come up with some new episodes?

This has happened in the past, Parks and Recreation was bumped from the Thursday night roster midseason after Outsourced got a full season order (even though it was never really funny.) Cancellation rumors where all over the place, but it wasn't cancelled. It has since been one of the funniest shows on NBC. I hope this isn't the end of Community, move it to another night or another timeslot, keep it away from The Big Bang Theory for starters. It has consistently been delivering some of the funniest and interesting material on television... Please don't cancel it... please.

I Never Thought I'd Be On A Boat

So I have to thank The Lonely Island for their music video, I'm On A Boat. If I never saw it I would have never decided to be T-Pain on Halloween. It came together last week, I found an I Am T-Pain microphone that auto-tunes your voice and you can make auto-tune audio files... I wasn't spending $35 on a big plastic microphone just to sell a Halloween costume.

I think it may be my best costume for a while; whenever I do a great costume I always end up being the black version of something. A few years ago I was Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, my name's Patrick Barker, but I was only recognized as 'Black' American Psycho (which is fine, I guess.) A few years later, I was emo... kinda hard to pull off with hair like mine.

I made this Demotivator myself...

So when I was giving out candy four black kids thought I was Flava Flav... and a white kid knew I was T-Pain. HE got extra candy, I gave the kids that laughed tootsie rolls.

Batman: Arkham City

Batman's back in a big way this month. Earlier this month the animated adaption of Batman: Year One was released on DVD and blu-ray. The movie features the voices of Bryan Cranston and Benjamin McKenzie as Lt. Gordon and Bruce Wayne as Batman learned the ropes in Gotham City.

Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill return as Batman and the Joker in Batman: Arkham City. Picking up some time after the events of Batman Arkham Asylum, Dr. Hugo Strange has turned a portion of Gotham City into a prison; housing most, if not all of Batman's villains. Batman and Catwoman are trapped inside Arkham City trying to find out what Strange's plan is, and what the Joker has to do with it. So far I've already fought Ra's al Ghul, Mr. Freeze and Solomon Grundy, not to mention countless goons working for the Penguin, Two-Face and The Joker.

Side quests abound, including searches for Deadshot, Victor Zsasz, and some very interesting puzzles devised by The Riddler. In Arkham Asylum, The Riddler never appears, but antagonizes Batman throughout. Now he's devised some SAW-esque traps for the Batman to solve in order to save innocent lives.

Besides the main story there are also unlockable challenge maps for Batman and Catwoman and there is DLC coming soon that will feature Robin and Nightwing in there own challenge maps. Batman: Arkham City is now available for PS3 and Xbox 360

Uncharted 3 Launch Trailer

The fall is a great time if you love video games. Batman: Arkham City was just released on Tuesday and there are a few big titles coming out in a few weeks. Two weeks from now, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception comes out for the PS3. Uncharted took the action platformer originated by Tomb Raider and gave it a much needed overhaul. Combining combat elements, such as cover-based 3rd-person shooting like in Gears of War with puzzle platforming from games like Prince of Persia made for a great experience. What sets the Uncharted series apart from other games is it's style, which pays tribute to the great adventure movies of old as well as appropriating elements from the Indiana Jones series and other series like it. The protagonist, Nathan Drake, is a treasure hunter who is a possible descendant of Sir Francis Drake. His attitude is not unlike Indiana Jones or Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Serenity, he cracks wise, and kicks ass in exotic locales.

Leading up to the release of Uncharted 3 Sony has been releasing trailers featuring Henry Jones Jr. himself, Harrison Ford. This video shows him sitting down for a Japanese commercial for Uncharted 3 and shows him taking the game for a spin. Whether he's actually playing or not is debatable but you cannot deny how cool it is to have the protagonist of arguably one of the best adventure movies of all time playing a video game that pays homage to the his character.

Right now, it's a toss-up between Office Predator (Predator in dress-casual attire) or a Black Lantern version of myself. The Adventures of Tintin Trailer

Christmas is coming quickly, and if I have to choose between an adorable action comedy collecting some of the best people in film-making together in one place and a remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I'm going to go with The Adventures of Tintin. Tintin is directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, and written by Stephen Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. You have the director of Saving Private Ryan and Raiders of the Lost Ark producing a 3D epic alongside the director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy; a movie written by the executive producer of Doctor Who, the director of Shaun of the Dead, and the director of Attack the Block.

That's just the production staff, but just look at the cast assemble by what can only be described as a Dream Team: You've got Jamie Bell from King Kong playing Tintin, and Andy Serkis from Rise of the Planet of the Apes as Captain Haddock. Then you have Simon Pegg and Nick Frost from Hot Fuzz, James Bond himself Daniel Craig, and a slew of character actors. This movie is shaping up to be a big hit. With the talent involved, the source material, and the technology available (James Cameron's 3D camera) this is shaping up to be the blockbuster of the holiday season. Avengers Assemble!

The Avengers movie is coming out next May, and last Tuesday the first official trailer for the movie was released featuring clips of Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Iron Man in action. I have tried my best to keep myself spoiler-free, but watching the trailer definitely excites me, so I'm going to have to show some serious restraint. Plus the fact that Joss Whedon, the king of the nerd, is directing it... May can't get here fast enough. Enjoy.

Portal: No Escape

I just finished the single player portion of Portal 2 on Steam. I had't played a Valve game since Left 4 Dead, and I never got around to playing Portal until I saw that it was free to play on Steam. I was pleasantly surprised by the original, and when I had the money and the time to play it I decided to buy Portal 2. I happened to buy it the weekend the newest DLC, Peer Review, was released and the price dropped to $14. That's a deal to me.
I thoroughly loved the single player campaign which balanced the incredibly aggravating puzzles with some laugh out loud hilarious dialogue. JK Simmons and Stephen Merchant had great delivery, Merchant especially.

One of the reasons I was interested in trying the Portal games was a recently released short Portal: No Escape. I think if any video game would make a good movie, it would definitely be portal

Monumental Mayhem

Roller Derby is back in Indianapolis this weekend. Friday thru Sunday Indy is playing host for the Midwest Regional Championships for the WFTDA (flat-track derby.) Indy's own Naptown Roller Girls are in the tournament and have a good chance to make it all the way to the championship game on Sunday.
Come on down to the Convention Center this weekend to catch all the action, the merch, and the girl on girl on rollerskate contact.

Corn Mazing

This weekend I went on a try to Lafayette, IN to a massive cornfield maze. Exploration Aches featured Halloween themed mazes like a spider web, a tombstone, and my favorite the horsemen an jack o'lantern. The maze had an underlining quest, featuing 25 hidden points throughout the mazes. The sun set around 7:45/8ish so we had to navigate in the dark, thankfully I had my trusty Maglite (I like to call it the Rodney King Special.)
Each spot had a hole-puncher and for each punch you were rewarded with a coupon for 25 different places in West Lafayette including Purdue's bookstore. Sure I live in Indy, but I'm a completist. Me and a few friends were able to find every destination in the maze in about 4 hours.

Lunch Special: Taj of India

Today for lunch I decided to hit up the nearest buffet to work. There's a Golden Corral close by, but I was jonsing for something specific, so I went to Taj of India near the Castleton mall which has an All You Can Eat lunch buffet. The menu is diverse for such a small setting; this time including some Punjabi chicken curry, Chicken Tikki Masala as well as some garlic naan, AND MANGO PUDDING. All you can eat for $8.70, not bad.

Fight Night: Dragon Gate

So my buddy Ewzzy and I got front row tickets to the Dragon Gate Pro Wrestling event at a Salvation Army gymnasium. So far there's been a lot of trash talk, sweat and tears; not to mention quite a lot of blood. One of the wrestlers went up for flipping kick from the turnbuckle to the floor. The floor is tile, no padding... he hit his head hard enough to give him a concussion and leave a large pool of blood.

The matches were great. I saw a lot of moves you'd never see a
WWE superstar attempt for their own safety. I'm thankful I put on deodorant because the room got so damn hot, I was sweating like a pig.

Still a great night.

Lunch Special: Ceviche

WARNING: DO NOT EAT THIS IF YOU HAVE CUT GUMS OR CRACKED LIPS.

I had my first McGriddle yesterday, my mom ordered it instead of a chicken biscuit. Honestly I have never felt more shame while eating until I bit into the amalgam of eggs, sausage, cheese, and bacon enveloped in two maple pancake patties. I walked around Wal Mart for an hour trying to work the sludge out of my system.
Today I decided for a somewhat healthier lighter lunch. So I'm back at Cancun for lunch. Today I'm eating the Ceviche, which is normally an appetizer but functions as a good dish. The whitefish is cured by the acid of lime juice and served with pico de gallo. The avocado slices are nice with it, and then you have your choice of ketchup or hot sauce to top the fish as well as club crackers to scoop the fish (or you can use their fresh tortilla chips.) All for $7.50

Fringe Returns 09/23

Fringe is returning for it's fourth season on the 23rd. I'm excited, one because I will be buying Season 3 tomorrow when it comes out (along with season 2 of Community,) but I'm also excited because I'm very happy with FOX for staying with the series for as long as it has. We live in a world where the network airwaves are dominated by reality shows and competitions; the scripted series is going the way of the dodo bird.

Fringe had a lot of ground to pick up, being a sci-fi series in the era of shows like Lost and Battlestar Galactica. Shows have tried to create deep complex stories and have failed right out of the gate: Invasion, The Nine, Flashforward, Surface, Threshold and most recently The Event. These shows suffered from the LOST curse, and at the beginning it looked like Fringe would end up the same way with it's close parallels to The X-Files and LOST. There have been a few rough patches here and there but the show has gotten exponentially better season to season.

That success has a lot to do with J.J. and the team of incredibly talented writers/producers who have an understanding of how to tell a deep intricate story with a pacing that does not require us to focus on every single detail (you can still do so if you choose.) The success can also be attributed to the stellar cast; I feel if it wasn't for John Noble, Joshua Jackson and Anna Torv this show would have probably failed like many of the other sci-fi series of the past few years. John Noble and Anna Torv even have been playing multiple versions of the same characters and never faltering in their delivery.

The F@#$ing Short Version

One of my favorite shows from the UK is The Thick of It. BBC America is trying to bring it over to the states in their new British comedy block. The Thick of It follows the same sort of style that Ricky Gervais put into The Office, replacing the paper company with the dealings of the British Parliament. This post watershed series has very strong language; but if you like that sort of thing you get a kick out of the lead character Malcolm Tucker. Played by Peter Capaldi, Malcolm Tucker has to wheel and deal when the idiots at the fictional Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship (DoCac) make mistakes or gaffs that could look bad for the sitting Prime Minister. The so-called King of Spin swears a lot, makes a lot of threats, when he swoops in to right the P.R. storm.

Doctor Who is Back

It's the classic time travel dilemma, what would you do if you had a time machine. The standard response is "Well, I'd kill Hitler." Well, the autumn premiere of Doctor Who tackles just that in Let's Kill Hitler. This season Doctor Who took some time off, ending on a very good cliffhanger. Many American shows like Burn Notice and Battlestar Galactic split their seasons in half, for production reasons, but it also made for some anticipation for the next new episode. The episode already premiered in the UK last Saturday, it's already on the web; and it is amazing. The Doctor, Hitler, and a regeneration... not a bad way to come back from a break. Check out the lead-up video to the premiere on youtube. Doctor Who Let's Kill Hitler premieres on BBC America this Saturday.

What would you do if you had a time machine? I'd stand in the background of classic movies, like The Observer on Fringe.

Lunch Special: Chili Cheese Etouffee w/ Crawfish

If I had a death row last meal, other I than an all you can eat continental buffet, it would definitely be some Yats. That's the place I take friends from out of town, buddies from school or work, and when I'm penny pinching, it definitely works in a pinch. Yats is cajun creole cooking, with a menu that changes daily depending on the location.
The portions go from a half plate to a whole plate (these are huge portions), you can also order pints and quarts worth of food if you're treating more than one person. You really get your money's worth when you go there, no matter what size you get. You can even mixmatch with their 1/2 and 1/2 deal.
Today I got the Chili Cheese Etouffee with crawfish. Quite possibly my favorite Yats dish, and a fan favorite. I got a full plate, a drink and extra bread for $7.50. Not bad if I do say so.

Community's Season 3 Casting Spectacular

So I am incredibly excited for the new fall season's television shows. I'm most excited for Community which is starting it's third season September 22nd. I never expected Community to last as long as it has and I think a lot of that has to do with creator Dan Harmon and the stellar cast he's put together. I got even more excited when I saw who's been added to the cast.

Michael K. Williams from Boardwalk Empire and The Wire is joining the cast as the study group's new Biology teacher. I'm really excited to see what he can do in a comedic role, normally he plays the thug or the street hood. His character in Boardwalk Empire, Chalky White, plays a very interesting role in the 1920's booze trade. I'm pretty sure he's going to knock it out the park.

I think the best bit of casting news so far is John Goodman is joining the cast as the new Vice Dean, and adversary for Dean Pelton. John Goodman joins the ranks of big name guest stars who've appeared on the show, like Betty White, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Lee Majors, Anthony Michael Hall, and Josh Holloway from Lost. Take a look at the first look NBC has released for the new season.

Here's something new, I'm testing out Blogger's mobile app, so I can do some blogging on the fly. I decided, since I'm on lunch I'll give you a taste (wink wink) of some of the great deals you can get for lunch.
Today I'm at Cancun Mexican Restaurant on 82nd and Craig st near the Castleton Mall trying out their lunch specials. I've decided on the Wet Burrito, a tortilla filled with rice, shrimp, and chicken. They call it a Wet Burrito because it's smothered in queso. It's amazing, and on Mondays it's only $7.15.

Are Americans as Stupid as Hollywood Thinks We Are?

I had the opportunity to see Attack the Block in theaters this weekend. The movie was an import from the UK, only showing in one theater in town. The premise of the movie was pretty simple: Some youths in hoodies mug a woman and have to then band together to save their apartment complex from ravenous pitch black alien creatures with glow in the dark teeth. You add some pot jokes, some drug dealers and Nick Frost as comedy relief and you've got the makes of an entertaining survival-horror action-comedy.

Now here's the thing that really bothers me, this movie was a midnight selection at the SXSW Movie Festival, and is currently at an 89% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.com, but for a while it looked like this movie would not get an American distributor. The reason why it was having difficulty finding an American backer was because the kids were speaking in thick South London accents, which if you've haven't had the opportunity to ever hear it before, it can be damn near unintelligible. The boys are speaking slang and jive, and people were suggesting the addition of subtitles to the movie so American audiences could understand them. Why is it that Hollywood thinks we need to have things dumbed down for us? We dub English audio over every movie coming out of China or Japan; actually any movie out of any country that doesn't speak some form of English. Those movies lose the tone, rhythm, and inflection of the people speaking; or they completely change the dialogue to better suit the American audience. Are we really that stupid?

I love foreign movies, Hero with Jet Li is one of my all-time favorites, and I have no problems watching them with the subtitles on. You get used to them after a while. But why put them in when the situation doesn't apply for them. Sure the accents take a little adjusting to, and sure you may not understand some of the slang, but that doesn't mean you need Hooked on Phonics to watch a good British movie.

While I'm on the subject of Hollywood and their need to be unnecessary, check out the trailer for the remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, or watch the original Swedish trilogy instantly on Netflix.

Did You Miss Me?

So it's been a couple months, but I'm back. I've been working wacky hours for the last few months so I have been shirking other activities. I've left a few things incomplete, like my March Movie Badass Bracket (which I promise I'll finish soon.) Also I bought L.A. Noire the day it was released, and I still haven't beaten it; the same goes for my copies of Pokemon White, Fable 3 and Dragon Age 2. I did do a lot of movie watching. I will hopefully have both matchups done tomorrow, the problem is that my alma mater Butler is back in the title game and I most definitely cannot miss that. Plus I also have to work so that gives me a small window to finish the bad ass bracket. I blame it all on Blue II.

Good Will Hunting took Damon's film career and shot it into the stratosphere, but his role in The Bourne Identity solidified his role as a film bad ass. Wahlberg's had a great career as well, starring in a reboot of The Planet of the Apes as well as the remake of The Italian Job. They've each had a few misfires, Damon starred alongside the late Heath Ledger in a movie about the authors of the Grimm Fairy Tales, The Brothers Grimm; Walhberg appeared in a not too well received adaptation of the video game Max Payne. They may not have been the best reviewed movies, but they were filled with great action.

Winner of the Matchup: Matt Damon. Damon is Jason Bourne, he made three amazing action movies featuring frenetic fight scenes, gunfights and car chases. He dined with the president of South Africa and won the Rugby World Cup in Invictus, an inspirational movie from director Clint Eastwood (another bad ass.) He was apart of triumvirate of superstars at the head of a large group of thieves in the Ocean's Eleven. He's had a big career, he's still going and sadly, he beats Marky Mark.

It's pretty close between the two when it comes to movies acted in. Think about it, Clint gave us Dirty Harry, the Man With No Name (or Joe if you have to be difficult.) Mel gave us Martin Riggs and Mad Max. The Dirty Harry franchise spanned five films and the Lethal Weapon series ended at four with a proposed reboot/remake? in the works. They've each made their way into the director's chair with Clint shifting his focus to directing with movies like Mystic River, Invictus, and Million Dollar Baby. Mel may be best known for riding a horse in Braveheart but he also directed the movie as well as Apocalypto. Controversy surrounded his adaption of The Passion of the Christ but just look at what he achieved with that movie, a movie written and directed by him spoken in Aramaic and Latin. It's the highest-grossing rated R movie of all time as well as the highest-grossing foreign language film of all time.

Winner of the Matchup: Clint Eastwood. I know Mel has done a lot for bad asses everywhere. Mad Max may be one of the most bad ass movies of all time and Mel's first appearance in Lethal Weapon on a ledge with a jumper and then jumping off.. Awesome. But come on. Clint is the man. Dirty Harry is an influential movie, for it's contribution to the cop movie; it is also a great example of taking current events, the zodiac killer, and making a fictional story inspired by them. He's made some great movies starring himself too, like Space Cowboys and Gran Torino. When you think bad ass Clint Eastwood is the epitome of the word.

Both actors has had long successful careers. It's hard to choose between them based on there body of work. Fishburne gave us Morpheus, a badass with sweet gravity-defying shades. He lied about his age so he could be cast as an underage kid in Vietnam in Apocalypse Now. But he may be best know for his role in what can be considered a modern day classic Boyz n the Hood. SLJ has been in a ton of movies, and commands the screen as soon as he arrives. He's know for that awful jhery curl in Pulp Fiction, and being the only jedi badass enough to rock a purple lightsaber.

Winner of the Matchup: Samuel L Jackson. When you talk about badasses you cannot ignore SLJ. In Long Kiss Goodnight, he wears a green suede suit with red leather loafers, get shot a couple of times, is spitting up blood and still manages to drive a car off a bridge while a bomb explodes behind him. Only he could pull that off. Give him a jhery curl wig, a braided soul patch, or let him rock the cue ball and he's always amazing. Plus in real life he signed on to do Snakes on a Plane based purely on the title, and when the studio wanted to change the title he threatened to walk away... they backed down.

Don't get me wrong, Patrick Swayze is most definitely bad ass. Just look at what he had to go through on the set of the A&E series The Beast. He was sick with cancer, went to receive Chemotherapy treatments, and would film a take then go puke and then come back and do another take. That's pretty bad ass. Kurt Russell wins for the fact that he has more badass roles. He was Stuntman Mike in Grindhouse, he was the original Jack O'Neal in Stargate, but he's know for Snake Plissken, the antihero from John Carpenter's Escape From New York, the inspiration for the Metal Gear Solid hero Solid Snake. Here's another thing, Kurt Russell directed Tombstone even though the credit went to George P. Cosmatos.

Both Jackie Chan and Jet Li had amazing movie careers in China, including modern day classics like the Once Upon a Time in China trilogy for Jet and the series of Police Story movie Jackie starred in.Jet Li starred in epic fare like Hero and Jackie Chan created fluid stunt sequences in Project A and Drunken Master. The reason Jackie Chan wins the matchup has to do with more the movies they both have done here in the states. Jet Li has done some entertaining American movies, debuting in Lethal Weapon 4 and appearing in kung-fu/hip-hop crossovers like Romeo Must Die, War and Kiss of the Dragon. Jackie Chan appeared in multiple well received movies, including the incredibly successful Rush Hour films and the Shanghai Noon/Knights movies.

To me this is like the unstoppable force vs the immovable object. A real fight between the two would be so insane thing to behold. I wouldn't want to see a winner, but if I had to choose between the two based purely on fighting style I'd pick Jet. I picked Jackie based on some of the punishment he's taken for his craft over the years, youtube some of the videos of the outtakes on his movies and you'll see why he's so badass.

Doctor Who Returns

Doctor Who is coming back soon. April 23rd is the premiere of the 6th series since the show returned in 2005. What's surprising is the announcement that Who fans won't have to wait to see the episodes, the show will be premiering in the states the same night it would premiere in England.

I am a big fan of the Doctor and I am very excited to see anything Who related. This past Friday for Red Nose Day, a charity event from Comedy Relief a two part short premiered featuring the Doctor, Amy Pond and her new husband Rory on the Tardis. The story titled Time is pretty funny, and works as a lead-in to the premiere episode entitled "The Impossible Astronaut."

Community's Coming Back for Thirds

It looks like NBCUniversal gets one thing right every now and then... Community just got renewed for a third season along side Parks and Recreation and The Office (seriously, that show isn't ending when Steve Carell leaves?) I'm surprised Community lasted more than a season. I loved it from the pilot and more often than not the shows I enjoy end up getting cancelled, and more often than not they are on NBC.

I cannot wait for the rest of the season, tonight's episode was good, not a centric episode about paintball or a homage to gangster films. That's what makes this show so enjoyable; the jokes can be in bombastic and in your face or the joke can be subversive, the type you have to rewind and watch again just to make sure it's okay to laugh at.

When I found out Community was coming back for a third season, I dropped my phone and did my best Magnitude impersonation possible.

Willis is in the lead, having been in more higher rated movies than Statham, and both appeared in Stallone's badass orgy The Expendable. Sadly a fight between the two was not in the cards, but I hear Willis may be the villain if a sequel is made... Maybe then we'd see this brawl actually happen. Compared to JCVD and Seagal these two guys have made quite a lot of successful movies both have spawned successful franchises (with a Die Hard 5 in the works right now.) That's not to say they haven't had their stinkers... aside from one enjoyable music number Hudson Hawk may be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. And Crank may have been outlandish, but it worked and when Statham's character dies at the end (spoiler If you were going to see it you would have seen it by now, get over it) it was a logical ending; but no they decided to do a sequel which was terrible. Seriously, who survives falling out of a helicopter?

Winner of the Match (Bruce Willis)
Bruce wins. The reason is simple, it only takes two words. Die Hard. The movie shot his career into the stratosphere. He created a character with depth, humor and the ability to kick major ass, with no shoes on to boot. Statham is great, but he became popular in a time when hyper-stylized action with wire worked and shaky cam footage is king. Don't get me wrong, the movies are great, but Willis has that little something extra that gives him the edge in this fight.

Seagal is in the lead by the narrowest of margins. Here's the problem with these two guys. They both kick serious ass, there's no doubt about that. They just haven't kicked any ass we've wanted to see for a long time. For all the critical acclaim for JCVD I never had any inclination to watch it. The last movie I saw Steven Seagal in that was actually a theatrical release (that is before I saw Machete) was Exit Wounds... a movie that tried to follow in the footstep's of Jet Li's Romeo Must Die, appealing to the black audiences and anyone who likes martial arts/wirework movies. Their most successful movies came in the late 80's and early 90's, JCVD made Blood Sport and Seagal had Under Siege.

Winner of this matchup: Steven Seagal. The reason Seagal moves on and not JCVD is simple. Seagal has definitely put on some poundage in the past 20 years... he fills out his Gi quite nicely as well as his police uniform. As much as we like to give him grief about being portly, he could still wipe the crap out of us. He also seems to have a good sense of humor about himself, allowing cameras to follow him around while he patrols the streets of Jefferson Parrish, Louisiana in Steven Seagal: Lawman and not to mention playing a villain opposite Danny Trejo in Machete. JCVD is old and will continue to make movies, but he's just too darn serious; Sylvester Stallone wants JCVD for a sequel to Expendables but JCVD has public said he wouldn't do it if Seagal was included. That's okay, skip an opportunity to appear in a movie that will actually have a theatrical release.

Seagal moves on to face Arnie in the next round... Will he stand a chance?

Red Skull Revealed

Until now the information about Captain America has been pretty sparse. The most we've gotten so far was the Super Bowl teaser which contained nothing more than a few quick flashes of action, this includes one quick shot of Hugo Weaving as Cappy's nemesis Red Skull.

Here's the first good look at Hugo Weaving in full make-up as Red Skull. I think he looks great. I love the SS outfit, all the way down to the H.Y.D.R.A. belt buckle. Personally I get more excited about a movie when they decide to stay tight lipped about information. The anticipation is part of what makes sitting in the theater at midnight so exciting.

I hope there's a trailer coming out soon... as much as I love Thor, this and Green Lantern are the movies I want to see this summer.

On movies alone, Arnold is in the lead, he has more hits than Sly, including two science fiction classics The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. On the other hand, Sly did give us Rambo and Rocky two iconic characters. Some people may say they overstayed their welcome, Rocky spawning five sequels include Rocky V, where Rocky punch-drunk and past his prime streetfights another boxer (how the mighty have fallen.) Later though, he would go on to appear in Cliffhanger, a critical and commercial success. Arnold did make some stinkers every now and then. After doing two movies based on the character Conan he reappeared as the Cimmerian in an epic flop, Red Sonja. He also made Collateral Damage which came out after 9/11 so it faired poorly at a time when critics did not to see movies about terrorism.

WINNER OF THE MATCHUP: Arnold Schwarzenegger

I picked Arnold as the winner of this matchup for a few reasons. Both actors have done a lot for action movies; there wouldn't be a Predator or Terminator, Rambo or Rocky. Outside of movies, they were responsible for the successful chain of Planet Hollywood restaurants with their cohort Bruce Willis. But when you think about it, look what Arnold has done. He became governor of California, even if he can't pronounce it properly. He might not have been the best governor of all time, but he stepped up amid a flood of controversy and manned a sinking ship; he did it well enough to warrant a second term. What did Stallone do? He got a statue of Rocky in Philadelphia, and directed himself in a couple movies, Rocky Balboa, Rambo and last year's The Expendables.

March Movie Badass Madness - Bracket Set

So here's the Bracket for March Movie Badass Madness. I had a list of over 30 actors to pick through and I think I've come up with a great group of sixteen. Some people were dropped from the final roster for various reasons, like Wesley Snipes going to prison for not paying his taxes did disqualify him eventhough he did do some very badass movies, Passenger 57 for example. Inception: Oscar Dark-Horse?

The Oscars are tomorrow and I am all but certain that it's going to be a two pony race photo finish between The Social Network and The King Speech taking the top prizes. I've already said who I think will win Best Picture and honestly if Th e King Speech wins I will be sorely disappointed. I mean, in a year of amazing movies that movie winning would be like Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan... wait, that actually did happen. Does it have to do with recall, does a movie have to have fresh buzz to remain noteworthy? Seriously, of all the movies nominated for best picture which movie had the most buzz and staying power... Inception.

Look at the numbers... Inception holds a 86% Rotten Tomatoes score (weighed down by internet bloggers like yours truly) and made over 823 million dollars at the box office alone. A summer movie with great reviews and a truly original idea to get behind... dreams within dreams with dreams, zero-G fights, upside-down streets, an epic Hans Zimmer soundtrack and Leo. You would think that'd be enough. I wonder who makes up the 'Academy' and what criteria they use to do their voting. I mentioned the fact that Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespeare in Love. What was the reasoning behind that, it was a happy show, with British accents? One of the best visions of one of the most vicious wars to date in stunning graphic detail, and I'm not just talking about violence, lost to a British romance.

I doubt Inception will win any top awards, I just feel like the voters don't want to recognize this movie's merits mainly because it's a summer popcorn flick. It contains one of the most original ideas I've seen, the most complex and self-contained idea since The Matrix.

I mentioned that Daft Punk wasn't nominated for an Oscar for it's score of Tron: Legacy. I sincerely hope Hans Zimmer's score for Inception will win... But in all likelihood, The King's Speech's score will win just because it's British.

March Movie Badass Madness

I have something very special planned for the month of March. It started with a voicemail I got from my brother. He asked me to do a subjective argument for which actor was more badass, Kurt Russell or Patrick Swayze. He wanted it to include their movie history and their personal life. His idea was great but it was a little too small. I texted him back with my idea. Next month I will be doing a bracket of movie badasses.

I'm culling through a list of movie stars whose careers have been action movie oriented. I'm slowly working through the large list of A, B and at sometimes C-list movie stars and I'm going to have a 16 actor bracket. Some names that would normally be consider may be dropped outright based on their personally issues tipping the scale against their favor, Mel Gibson comes to mind. Over the month I'm going whittle the actors down to the top two most badass actors around.

Now, here's how I plan to do it.

The actors are going to be given an aggregated score based on Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings.
Then I'm going to give a point/counterpoint of each actor.
The person with the better RT score and best pro to con ratio will win the round and move up in the bracket.
If there is a tie I will render the decision based on the RT score of the two actors most recent movie.

I will have a bracket made up before the end of the month so you make you own decisions as to who should be the most badass movie actor around.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights Sneak Peek

One thing Marvel and DC have gotten right recently is their attempts at making animated movies that appeal to a wider range of audiences. I grew up watching Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men cartoons, I even watched the Justice League cartoons and the re-imagined X-Men Evolution cartoon. As my generation got older the subject matter in their cartoons began to become derivative, but a change started with the direct to dvd adaptation of Ultimate Avengers. These animated movies offered the same complex and diverse characters the were written by Mark Millar in the Ultimates. More movies in this vein followed like Invincible Iron Man and Batman Gotham Knights.

These adaptations featured big actors like NCIS's Mark Harmon, William Baldwin and James Woods who voiced Superman, Batman and Owlman in Justice League: Crisis of Two Worlds. Most recently there was an adaptation of Grant Morrison's epic Superman story All-Star Superman which showed the last days of Superman. Law and Order: SVU actor Christopher Meloni voiced a rookie version of the Hal Jordan in the first movie devoted to this summer's sure to be blockbuster Green Lantern, in Green Lantern: First Flight

The next big animated movie based on a comic franchise will be Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, which is based on stories from various Green Lantern books, featuring Nathan Fillion as the voice of Hal Jordan. Fillion was a fan pick for the live action adaptation of Green Lantern (my personal pick as well, but hey Ryan Reynolds will do fine.) He's also appeared in Justice League: Unlimited and was also the voice of Wonder Woman's love interest in an animated movie based on that comic series.

The Many Faces of Spider-Man

Spider-Man Has gone through a lot of costume changes over the years. In the weeks leading up to the crossover event Civil War he wore a suit of armor designed by Tony Stark that had 4 metal appendages that could function independently with his arms and legs, like the eight legs of a spider. After revealing his identity to the public and beginning to be hounded by supervillains and the Kingpin he decided to return to an earlier costume design in Back in Black, a costume based on the one he wore while hosting the venom symbiote. At other periods, and also alternate universes there has been a Spider-man, this was the basis of the videogame Spider-Man: Shattered Dimesions which featured 4 different versions of the wall crawler.

I decided to compile as many different versions of Spider-Man as I could find after I saw that Spider-Man would be donning a new suit for his work with the three surviving members of the Fantastic Four. This white suit looks like a film negative version of the symbiote suit Peter Parker used to wear, but it does look cool. He will be appearing alongside the Future Foundation in starting in The Amazing Spider-Man #658.

New Thor Trailer Strikes

A new Thor Trailer hit the web today, showcasing Chris Hemsworth's characterization of Thor, the interations he'll have in Asgard and on Earth and the ass kickery to follow. Check out the new trailer, which also features more Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings, which is never bad.

I for one am excited to see how Kenneth Branagh has crafted the world of Asgard. The last time I saw him doing anything he was holding a live hand grenade under his chin in Valkyrie. The only thing missing from this trailer was Thor should have called for a wench to refill his coffee cup before he threw it to the floor, but I digress. Thor hits the theaters, in 3d, on May 6th.

I hope we one day get a sequel featuring Throg...

War of the Green Lanterns

Green Lantern has become one of the flagship properties at DC Comics since Geoff Johns decided to bring back Hal Jordan in Green Lantern: Rebirth. Since 2004 he has crafted a trilogy of Green Lantern tales that have reshaped the lantern mythology as well as expanded the universe to include multiple lantern corps based within an emotional spectrum. The summer blockbuster event of 2007 introduced us to the Yellow Lanterns, the Sinestro Corps, named for their leader who was the first to wield a yellow ring. Then last year Johns outdid himself with Blackest Night, a DC Universe engulfing tale that showed both the expansion of the emotional spectrum but the return of dead DC characters as zombie-like Black Lanterns. In the end, the monsters were defeated and a select group of heroes and villains saw their lives returned to them; is has been covered in comics under the banner of Brightest Day.

But things are not exactly bright and shiny in the the lantern corps. A fragile truce between the seven lantern corps is strained by conflict both on earth and the anit-matter universe as something is stirring across the universe. Eventually it is revealed that a believed-lost Guardian of the Universe, Krona, has returned and has been taking emotional avatars to help him in his quest to find an answer to how life began. To stop him fragile alliances have been made between enemies. And as these secrets come into the light there has been infighting between lanterns. This is where we are currently in the pages of Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps and Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors.

Coming in the next few weeks will be War of the Green Lanterns, the next big story from writer Geoff Johns. Ideals and friendships will be put to test as the Green Lanterns try to stop whatever Krona has planned for the emotional entities, and life itself. Who will be victorious, will the friendship between earth's four Green Lanterns hold?

Whatever Happened to The Runaways?

I've mentioned once or twice how much I enjoyed Brian K. Vaughan's comic book series The Runaways. The idea to have a group of kids running away from their super-villain parents caught the attention of many people. I am such a fan that I went as far as to bash the artist who was doing the art alongside Joss Whedon on a dreadfully-long-delayed story arc, Dead End Kids. That was back in January of 2008, the final issue of that run came out in June of '08. Things looked up when it was announced that the third volume of The Runaways would start coming out in August of that year Terry Moore taking over as the writer. He released two arcs, Dead Wrong and Rock Zombies in his run as writer with Humberto Ramos taking over for Michael Ryan as the artist. Their style was somewhat goofy compared to what Adrian Alphona had done in the first two and a half volumes.

Then after the end of Rock Zombies, nine issues into the third volume it was announced that Kathryn Immonen and Sara Pichelli would be taking over on the Runaways. They came out with a bang and killed on of the Runaways is their arc, Homecoming. Their run lasted only 4 issues, and then the comic went into hiatus. That was over a year ago... What's the deal Marvel? There have been rumblings over at Disney, where they are trying to adapt Runaways into a movie that will appeal to young comic book fans... But what about the fans who are waiting (rather impatiently I might add) for some new Runaways. We've been forced see Nico Minoru and Karolina Dean bounce around random comics. Karolina appeared in the limited series S.W.O.R.D. as a supplemental character.

I think is the problem with comic books sometimes. Like with television, it feels like the editors think they know what we want to read better than we do. They focus on the staples of the industry or bleed a property dry and ignore the other properties (how many comic books are currently featuring Wolverine, Captain America and Deadpool, honestly.)

I hope The Runaways will come back, if only for more Jo Chen covers.

The Best Comic Book On the Shelves

I think, Secret Warriors may be the best comic book you can buy today. I say that after reading the first part of the final story arc of the series. The team was created by Brian Michael Bendis and made their debut in the pages of the massive Marvel crossover Secret Invasion. Nick Fury and his second in command, Daisy Johnson had been in hiding since the events of Secret War, where Nick recruited the top Marvel superheroes on a covert mission and the proceeded to whipe their memories of the event. This led to his removal from S.H.I.E.L.D. and during that time he had to work behind the scenes. He helped Bucky Barnes located the assassin who shot Captain America, without ever being seen.

After he helped beat back the Skrulls in Secret Invasion we learned what he had been doing all that time. He learned S.H.I.E.L.D. was a branch of the evil inc. H.Y.D.R.A. who he had been fighting most of his uncommonly-long life. So using his team of unknown super-powered soldiers he took went about destroying as much of H.Y.D.R.A. as he possibly could. This included reuniting with the surviving members of the Howling Commandos who fought alongside him and Captain America during WWII, and drafting as many former S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and operatives as possible.

What makes this book so good is the writing; the stories move with a dynamic flow, calling to mind movies like The Bourne Trilogy or Tom Clancy novels, like The Hunt For Red October. Hickman has created a tightly wound tale full of espionage, complex characters, betrayal and double crosses. Hickman took the characters first created by Bendis and gave us a reason to follow them; when characters were hurt you felt bad for them and when they died you mourned for them. Stefano Caselli's art is crisp and modern, with some panels utilizing incredible amounts of detail and others using the minimal required detail to articulate something.When you put Hickman's detailed scripts over Caselli's art you get one of the best comic books on the market today. Sadly, there are only three issues left and with what happened in the first part of the final story "Wheels Within Wheels" it will probably go out with a bang.

The Rock Returns for Wrestlemania XXVII

Vince McMahon advertised last week that the host of Wrestlemania XXVII would appear on Monday Night Raw this week and indeed he did. To a MASSIVE pop ~~Dwayne Johnson~~ The Rock returned to the WWE last night. If he doesn't wrestle at Wrestlemania I'll be mad, but I know he's said that he'd never wrestle again... kinda like how Dennis Miller has said he would never reappear on SNL. I must say, that was the loudest I have heard a WWE crowd in a long while. He's probably going to spend half of Wrestlemania advertising Fast Five...

Let's hope Kane walks to the ring and Chokeslams Justin Bieber... Oh yes, he's going to be at Wrestlemania too...

The Spider-Man Reboot is Amazing

The "Untitled Spider-man Reboot" finally has a name, one Spider-man friends should recognize. Andrew Garfield will be donning the revamped Spidey outfit, web shooters included (squee!!), in The Amazing Spider-man. Right now, The Amazing Spider-man is set to be released on July 3, 2012... Sweet, we'll be alive long enough to see the movie and buy it on Blu-Ray before the world comes to an end...

Here's hoping there an homage to the live-action Amazing Spider-man TV series somewhere in this movie. Sony's already got an official website for Amazing Spider-man. http://www.theamazingspiderman-movie.com/

Movies and Video Games Don't Mix.

One thing that has become common place in the world of entertainment is that when a major motion picture is released, invariably there must be a video game to coincide with it. This has been going on since the NES and SEGA Master System, but is now so common that you've come to expect them. The problem with these officially licensed video games is they are normally poorly made.
Think about it, how many movies have been made into video games since the Atari:

ET: The Extra Terrestrial
The Godfather
Wayne's World
X3
Wolverine
Fantastic Four
Iron Man
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Super Star Wars Trilogy
Home Alone I&II
Batman (and every sequel)
Superman Returns
Scott Pilgrim Vs the World

You get my point. Last year Sega released a game version of Iron Man 2, a 3D enabled Avatar game was released for the PS3, an arcade beat 'em up game based off of Scott Pilgrim Vs the World was released on the PS3 and 360 arcades, and a game based in the Tron: Legacy universe came out after the movie's release. Excluding Scott Pilgrim each of those movie-based games received very negative reviews. Then Tron: Legacy tie-in game, Tron: Evolution received a D+ rating from 1UP.com and a passing 6.0/10 from IGN.com, based solely on the fact that it takes more than visual effects and nostalgia to make a good video game.

Is it because the entertainment industry thinks we need to gobble up as much media as humanly possible that they make these games... if we love the movie then surely we'll go out and buy the game? I loved Home Alone as a kid, but I wasn't able to beat the SNES adaptation until I was 22 because it was so darned frustrating (why are Harry and Marv immortal, honestly?)

I say all of this because two of this summer's sure to be blockbusters have already released trailers for their video game tie-ins... Will they buck the trend, we'll find out together when Thor: God of Thunder and Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters are released alongside their movie counterparts for the Wii, PS3, 360 and DS this spring.

Does The Social Network Stand A Chance?

I'm somewhat dreading the Oscars this year... I'd like to say it's because Daft Punk didn't get nominated for Best Score, or the fact that Christopher Nolan did not get a nomination for Best Direction for Inception but those are not the causes of my dread. Roger Ebert does a 'stump the expert' type of competition every year where he makes his Oscar picks for the top 24 categories and then other people make their picks and wait to see if they win prizes, it's like bracketbusting with NCAA Basketball. I trust Ebert's judgement on things about 80% of the time, personally I loved Green Hornet but I also love Seth Rogen, and he and I are in agreement when it comes to this year's Best Picture. It goes like this, The King's Speech will win Best Picture.

Am I happy about this position? No and I'll tell you why. How is it that the best movie of the year, as mentioned by as many outlets that make that designation, is in this situation well I'll let Roger's words explain it best. Read the rest of Outguess Ebert here.

Hollywood churns out violent crap every weekend and then puts on a nice face by supporting a respectable picture at Oscar time. I mean that not as a criticism of “The King's Speech,” which is a terrific film, but as an observation. A British historical drama about a brave man struggling to overcome a disability and then leading his people into World War II looks better to the academy than a cutting-edge portrait of hyperactive nerds.

And he's got a good point. What is it about the British that makes everything they make gold. Shakespeare in Love for example, is a good movie and it won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan which critics felt is still the most accurate portrait of war that has been done. Don't get me wrong, I loved The King's Speech, but I just don't think it's the best movie of the year... I think it's not even in the top 5. Is it just because the movie is British? Are the stories better in the UK or the people, because their teeth certainly aren't. Or is the speech impediment they reason for the acclaim, because if that's the case then we've got a Tropic Thunder situation on our hands. Who's disability's better - Jessie Eisenberg's Mark Zuckerberg who more than likely has Asperger's or Colin Firth's King George's stammer?

As I write this all I can think about is John Oliver's jokes about the sound of British people's voices. He may be right. But, just because words sound better coming out of Colin Firth than they do out of Jessie Eisenberg does not mean The King Speech should steal the Oscars.

X-Men The First Class Trailer

So I find myself in a very strange situation. As much as I love Matthew Vaughn and what he did with Kick-Ass, Layer Cake and the under appreciated adaptation of Stardust I find myself dreading his X-Men The First Class movie. I know Matthew Vaughn could make an amazing movie about Xavier's original team of gifted young mutants, that's not exactly what's happening. X-Men The First Class was a series of mini series events where the original X-Men team are adjusting to being brand new superheroes entering a world already populated by people like Thor and the Fantastic Four. What they're doing at Fox under the production supervision of Bryan Singer is make a story about the relationship between Charles Xavier and the man who would be Magneto. Even that's not a bad idea in theory, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have pretty good on screen chemistry and that part of the movie will probably be good.

Here's my issue with the movie. Instead of doing the movie as a standalone story explaining the relationship between Magneto and Charles Xavier they decided to link this movie to all of the other movies they've made at Fox. The reason for this was so Fox could keep the X-Men rights from reverting back to Disney. As a result they've decided to incorporate a slew of characters that only the hardcore X-fans will know about, characters who've either already been established in the film series' continuity or never be untilized. Instead of Cyclops, Iceman, Marvel Girl and Angel teaming up with Beast we get Havok (Cyclops' brother) and Mystique. That's a deal breaker for me right there. If you're going to make this movie to stick it Disney that's fine, make the movie and call it something else.

I am interested in a few things, the fact that's it's been described as a 60's cold war spy story with superpowers is interesting and having the secret society The Hellfire Club at the heart of the espionagesque tale is promising. I do also like the fact that the movie features both Mystique and Azazel (Nightcrawler's biological parents) is pretty awesome for the hardcore fan of X-history.

As much as I'm upset over the story choices, I do have to say having January Jones as Emma Frost was an interesting casting choice, the same goes for Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw... I can't wait to see January in one of those skimpy Emma Frost outfits.

My expectations for this movie are very low, especially after seeing Ratner's X-Men 3 and that dreadful Wolverine prequel. What do you call a prequel of a prequel?

Why Don't They Just Make That Movie?

Dragon Age II is coming out in a few weeks and I showed my dad the trailer for it a few days ago. I showed him Dragon Age: Origins and explained to him that it's basically a choose your own adventure LOTResque RPG with multiple origin stories and multiple endings. He saw the trailer for Dragon Age II and the first thing he said was "Yeah that's pretty cool, why don't they just make that movie?"

It's a valid question. We've reached the point where our technology is good enough where in-game cinematics are as good or better than some movie's CGI scenes. For example, look at the trailer for Dragon Age II.

Maybe the issue is sure they can make the movie, but it would have to be live action. We're seeing this right now with David O Russell trying to get a movie based on the Uncharted franchise off the ground. He wants who he wants to play Nathan Drake, the fans want who they want, and other fans think the movie shouldn't even be made. The original Uncharted game was crafted to be a Indiana Jones-inspired game where you take control of a man like Indiana Jones and play through a movie. Why make a movie about a game inspired by a movie, it just seems way too meta.

We are halfway there though, games like Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption incorporated cinematic elements into their gameplay. Mass Effect 2 even contained the likeness of Yvonne Strahovski and Martin Sheen who lent their voices to the game. A game coming out this spring called LA Noire features full face mapping for dialogue like James Cameron used in Avatar to show facial expression in the video game characters. LA Noire is set in 40's era Hollywood and you play a detective, the object of the game is to determine whether someone is lying or telling the truth through interrogation.

My dad does have a good point. The Star Wars Old Republic MMO is coming out soon and they've released trailers with massive lightsaber battles, Sith vs Jedi vs Bounty Hunter. I'd love to see this trailer made into a full length movie... It's be better than anything being pumped out by Lucas.

Justified Season 2 Premiere

Justified returned tonight with a very strong episode. It picked up immediately where the first season ended with a massive shootout between Marshall Rayland Givens and a group of drug runners. Later in the episode the new foils to the Marshall were introduced. Jeremy Davies joins the cast as a member of a gang of pot growers who have no qualms about killing to protect their business (finally, a show with a LOST alumnae you might actually want to watch.)

The humor is still there, the action is there, the characters are complex and diverse. Do yourself a favor, check out Justified on FX

One of my favorite ads from the Super Bowl just happened to be about Justified. Like the promo that metareferenced Star Wars this ad recalls one of Clint Eastwood's most famous quotes from the Dirty Harry franchise.

Captain America Teaser

The Super Bowl is known for it high-priced commercial advertising. Last Sunday during the big game 17 different movie teasers were shown including the first look at Captain America (I refuse to say it's unnecessary subtitle, I don't care how un-politically correct Captain America is.) The teaser was nothing more than 33 seconds of quick cuts but you do get a sense of what they're going for.

You get to see a few things in the ad, a very brief look at Captain America with some of the Howling Commandos and Bucky Barnes... Some hooded troops who I'm guessing are probably AIM goons, and you see Steve Rogers with his shield. I was excited to see what the Red Skull looked like. Until the Super Bowl ad all we had seen of Hugo Weaving's Red Skull was him in a magazine photo of him without the skull face holding what looks like a Cosmic Cube. The makeup they did on him looks pretty good.

I hope we get a full trailer with some action soon... 7/22/2011 seems so far away...

Cupid Strikes Back

It decided to snow yesterday, on top of the snow and ice that was already of the ground.

These pictures were taken around noon when I grabbed our garbage cans, the snow was coming down at white out levels of intensity. At that point I had no intentions of going out in the dreadful weather we've been having in Indy, but I had made plans to go to the Naptown Roller Derby. And I'm glad I went... A couple of friends got together and we git there early enough to secure ourselves some suicide seats surrounding the track.

It made for some awesome pictures... Keep a look out for the 501 Imperial and Rebel Squadrons who made a guest appearance at the match, specifically there was a stormtrooper in a kilt and Jack Sparrow stormtrooper.

An Idiot Abroad

This is Karl Pilkington, and if you haven't heard of him that's fine. You've probably heard of his buddies Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant? They're the creators of The Office, Extras and the Ricky Gervais Show.

Well they had the genius idea to have Karl travel the world, setting him on an adventure to see the Seven Wonders of the World. That's a journey I would give my left testicle for. Here's the problem, Karl is properly stupid, and the show documenting his adventures around the world has aptly been named An Idiot Abroad.
Karl has become so popular in the UK because he is just unbelievably stupid.

Now, it seems stupid to give an idiot a show and let him cut loose, but hey it's been done before... Glenn Beck has a television show. Take a look at some of the stuff he did while in China. Having actually lived in China for a time I found it incredibly funny.

I love Ricky Gervais' standup routines, and on the DVD for his special 'Politics' he put in an extra of sorts. Here's a 20 minute interview with Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons

I don't have a 12-sided die on hand to give last night's episode of Community a DnD worthy score, 10 out of 10 doesn't really do it justice. They managed to do another entertaining self-contained themed adventure, like their paintball and zombie attack Halloween episodes, and took what could have been a one-off bit character and gave him a story filled with uncommon amounts of depth. The plot of the episode is centered around Fat Neil (Charley Koontz) a character seen only once before in an episode where he gets Britta to flash him for RHCP tickets.

Fat Neil loves DnD and when Jeff notices that Neil may be depressed he suggests the study group come together on the weekend and play some Dungeons and Dragons with Neil. The only problem is, Pierce is not invited. There were a lot of funny moments, specifically Britta doing a very good albeit unintentional Hermione Granger impersonation with her concerns for Goblin and Gnome politics. There's another hilarious scene where Annie, playing as Hector the Well-Endowed, trades sexual favors with Abed the female Elf maiden for a Pegasus so the group can rescue Fat Neil's +3 sword from Pierce.

The episode is great, the reasons for Jeff inviting Fat Neil to play with the study group are interesting character developments as well as the scenes with Fat Neil and Pierce. Community does a great job in the turn-your-mind-down humor so you don't have to struggle to understand the humor (like The Office or 30 Rock.) What they did well here was take a character in Fat Neil that could have popped up for a few seconds every now and then and in one episode created a character you could empathize with if you've every been on the receiving end of bullying and sympathize for. Now if only we could get an episode devoted to Garrett... Dan Harmon, get working on that please.

Here's a piece of advise, I won't charge you anything it's free on me, make sure you have adequate space to play your Kinect or make sure you keep your eyes on your children or this will happen.

Icepocalypse 2011: Day 3

For those of you that have power and internet capabilities in the midwest, I just wanted to show off some of the pictures from my front yard, three days after the massive ice storm came through Indianapolis... The picture at the top is the sheen from the the sunset hitting the large hump snow cover in a sheet of ice. Some of the other pictures include my dad standing on top of about 5 to 6 inches of snow and ice and icicle formations on the shrub outside our front door. The ice melted off of the roof is cover a third of the shrub. Let's just hope there is no round 3. This disaster doesn't need a sequel.

Oscar Snub - Tron Legacy's Soundtrack

I know this is a little late, but I'm still upset that nobody recognized just how good the Tron Legacy soundtrack was. I guess the fact that it's not attached to a movie of such sheer brilliance as The Social Network or The King's Speech it wouldn't be nominated for a Oscar for Best Score. Now don't get me wrong, Trent Reznor did an amazing job on The Social Network's score, but just listen to a few songs from the Tron Legacy soundtrack. I guess my problem is Daft Punk. Is it because of who they are and the style of music that they pump out? Seriously, Three 6 Mafia won an Oscar for Hustle and Flow's "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp." The song was great, the movie was definitely worthy of it's praise for the accurate portrait of life in Memphis, TN.

My only explanation for it's Oscar snub is the fact that Tron Legacy was butchered by critics. But look at look at what the critics had to say on this 'For Your Consideration' poster designed by shokxone-studios, a designer who makes poster and such. Justified Star Wars Promo

Justified returns next week for it's second season on FX and I'm quite excited for it's return. One reason for that is I already miss Terriers on FX and the other reason I'm excited for the show is Timothy Olyphant's Raylon Givens. Rayland is a modern day Rooster Cockburn from True Grit. In the first five minutes of the pilot he shoots a man in cold blood in front of hot people at a Miami hotel. He returns to his hometown of Harland, KY and proceeds to have a 2 on 1 Mexican standoff, has a gun fight in the wood, sleep with his married ex wife, and run afoul of drug dealers. Quite the entertaining neo-Western.

Here is a tv promo ad for the second season. The scene plays out as a reference to Star Wars where Rayland play Han Solo and a criminal plays Greedo. What makes the scene meta is the fact that Rayland recognizes the significance of the situation and uses it to his advantage.

I'm still upset with FX for the way Nip/Tuck ended... and they cancelled Terriers.

One of my friends was asking me to do some movie reviews for a website he's working on. That's right up my alley and I decided to pick some movies I actually want to see to review. Here are a couple of trailers for some movies I'm interested in seeing.

Seriously, what can make a movie with Nicholas Cage better, Amber Heard, crazy Devil-worshiping cults and 3D... and another Nicholas Cage hairstyle.

Liam Neeson in another 'middle-age man whooping ass and taking names' movie... sign me up. Taken was one of best movies... and no I'm not count Nell has one of his best movies.

I've been excited for this movie since I heard Frost and Pegg were doing a movie about aliens. The fact that the movie is written by the duo and directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad and Adventureland) makes this a very exciting project... plus Kristen Wiig and Jason Bateman to boot.

Your Highness
David Gordon Green really impressed me when he did Pineapple Express with Seth Rogen and James Franco, and Eastbound and Down is one of the funniest shows coming out of HBO. I'm excited for Your Highness, not because of the high-resolution pictures of Natalie Portman in a thong or the fact that Zooey Deschanel is in it with her adorableness, I love Danny McBride's writing style; The Foot Fist Way is one of the most underrated comedies from the past 10 years.

Source Code
I'm expecting a lot from Duncan Jones after his amazing hard sci-fi throwback Moon with Sam Rockwell. Source Code sounds interesting, but I'm still not too sure what I think about Jake Gyllenhaal... it's been a while since I saw a movie with him that I really liked, and that was Donnie Darko.

I'm waiting for a Captain America trailer... The fact that there isn't one yet irks me.

Awesome Lightsaber Duel

I saw this really sweet video these two guys made. It's a choreographed lightsaber duel. The effects work was pretty clean... and there moves were pretty good. I personally like the fact their videos were so well received that one of the guys was offered a job by Lucasfilms. Check out RvB2: Ryan vs. Brandon 2... I also put up Ryan vs Dorkman 2, #2 in Time Magazine's Best Fan Films of All Time.

And we all made fun of Star Wars Kid... if it wasn't for him we wouldn't be here today.

I read this strange article on CNN.com about the lack of diversity this year at the Oscars... Now I've seen 4 of the five movies featuring a best actor, sorry Javier Bardem you're not included in this rant (wait, isn't he Spanish?)

Okay, here's my problem with these types of articles... Does it really matter who are nominated if they are the best... Are we going to have to include the best racial character every year to keep up some sort of quota? I have seen True Grit, 127 Hours, The Social Network, and The King's Speech now and the roles up for best actor are incredibly diverse. James Franco displayed all the signs of desperation, fear and emotion you would expect if you were trying to cut off your arm. Jeff Bridges took the role of 'Rooster' Cockburn in True Grit, a role that won John Wayne his only Oscar. His 'Rooster' had all the makings of a rough around the edges law man in the twilight of his career, boozing and shooting his way through the wild west. Colin Firth played a man with deep-rooted emotional issues in The King's Speech, a man unable to speak without stammering. Jesse Eisenberg's Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network was smart and detached while he and his friend created most popular website in the world, a characterization that danced the line of a high-functioning Aspergers person.

Each of these roles were different: you've got a one-armed hiker, a stuttering king, a computer programmer, an old marshall (grit included), and whatever Javier Bardem was doing in Biutiful (but seriously he's just too handsome and Spanish all he has to do is speak in an accent and drop a tear or two and he's set.) I guess you could have nominated Denzel Washington for Unstoppable or The Book of Eli as the affirmative action vote, but was he as good as the other five people nominees?

I can't wait to see Franco host the Oscars, he can be pretty darn funny when he wants to be.

The Trashmaster - The Grand Theft Auto Movie

I found this interesting movie on Joblo.com. Filmmaker Mathieu Weschler used Grand Theft Auto IV to create a full-length movie. Using some amazing editing skills, he took in-game footage and made a 88-minute movie, complete with a plot, voice actors, and a soundtrack.

He's a summary of the movie as described by Weschler

"The "trashmaster" divides his time between collecting garbage and cleaning up other forms of trash fouling up New York City's streets: dealers, small-time criminals... When the dancers in his favorite strip club are mysteriously killed, the trashmaster finds himself hot on the trail of a particularly twisted serial killer."

Personally I think this is awesome, but I could only imagine the amount of time it took put all of this together, into one cohesive story. I stop working on a post for this site if it takes me more than a half hour. Check out the full movie on Dailymotion, in HD, or if you're gonna be in San Francisco this February, it is gonna be screened at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival.

This year has been a great year for holiday events. I've already mention that Community and Doctor Who have Christmas episodes out. Even Misfits had a Christmas special to end out their second season; complete with a delusion priest trying to make people believe he is Jesus reborn, a baby's birth and a disgusting exchange with the afterbirth.

Syfy, who has been having a well documented issue with the handling of their series, came back with two out of continuity holiday themed episodes of Eureka and Warehouse 13. Eureka was shrinking and only the sheriff and a scientist determined to solve the secret of Santa Claus could save the day.

Leverage returned with a two week event that started with a Christmas episode involving a Mall heist and credit card fraud. They then returned the following week for their 2-hour season finale event.

Even Top Gear is getting into the holiday spirit. Top Gear returned this week in the UK for a new series, beginning with an American Road Trip. Boxing Day, the day after Christmas for us Americans, the boys are on a race following the path of the three wise men, from Iraq to Bethlehem.

My Top 5 TV Shows of 2010

We're getting close to the end of the year... So I've decide to do a couple of year end lists... I'm gonna start with what I think is the easiest. I watch a lot of TV. I've mentioned how much I love Community. I've watched so many good television shows that it isn't even in what I consider to be my top 5; and as much as I loved it, neither is The Walking Dead. So here is My Top 5 TV Shows of 2010:

5. LOST Final Season* - I watched LOST from the night of the pilot religiously. I watched it live every week and my loyalty and faith in Cuse/Lindelof never wavered for six seasons. Were there questions that never were answered, of course. The show was a mystery series, with mystery being the key word. Not every mystery needed to be solved for LOST to be great. LOST fell into the same trap that Battlestar Galactica fell into last year. People's expectations of what an show's ideal ending will be are often never met. I for one loved the journey, and never once was disappointed.

4. Breaking Bad Season 3 - The awards are all worth it. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul play two of the most complex and real characters on television and the third season of Breaking Bad showed us what happens to desperate men when stakes are raised. Do they rise to meet them or get buried underneath the weight of them. Each episode functioned like a slow-roasting pressure cooker. The tension built until a climax, which for a few episodes, ended explosively and violently.

3. Doctor Who Season 5 - I was literally wiping the tears away when David Tennant gave his final line as the Doctor on New Years Day. I gave Matt Smith a chance when he arrived as the eleventh regeneration of the Doctor, and I'm glad I did. His characterization gives the Doctor a lighthearted whimsy that Christopher Eccleston's leather-bound Doctor and David Tennant's Chuck Taylor-wearing did not have. His expressions of anger and fear are brilliant. Karen Gillan makes a perfect companion, one who isn't lovesick like Rose Tyler or Martha Jones. Stephen Moffat has written a great overarching story with the Pandorica, he did the same with his modern re-imaging of Sherlock Holmes. I can't wait for the Christmas Carol-themed episode featuring Michael Gambon.

2. Terriers* - It's definitely a shame that more people did not give Terriers a chance. Hank and Britt were two of the most interesting characters to follow for 13 weeks. Like Breaking Bad, Hank and Britt were desperate men trying to make a living as private detectives when a case that hit close to home dropped them into a ever-widening conspiracy that at multiple times hit close to home. And the episodes that didn't involve the series-centered conspiracy did an amazing job to establish that these two guys were definitely in over their heads at all times. It is too bad that the show only lasted for one season, but we were left with the hope that they would ride of into the sunset as heroes.

1. Misfits - Now, the first series of Misfits debuted at the end of last year, but I didn't catch it until this Spring. Misfits is my top pick for a few reasons. Firstly, the show is about youth offenders in community service who get superpowers from an unexplained storm. Secondly, the abilities that these characters exhibit are deeply rooted who the characters are and what they desire. Thirdly the shows first two seasons are contained to only 12 episodes and a Christmas special. This limitation has made for a contained and condescended very of Heroes and Skins mashed together. The action is frenetic at some points, the characters have depth (which is almost unheard of for most shows about teenagers.) There's been talk about adapting the show here in the states, but this show is amazing. Sex, drug use and violence are frequent throughout, and the subject matter could never be done for US audiences (audiences would love it as is, but watchdogs would neuter it).

Season's Beatings

So a lot's been going on recently. The biggest update being a new job. I finally join the working masses. But right before I started working at Sallie Mae I had an opportunity to have some fun with some friends. Me and my friend Ewzzy went to a Naptown Roller Girls match. I had no idea that Indy had roller girls. It was a great night, and the 1960's misogynistic in me definitely enjoyed watching girls on roller skates with cute nicknames, like Hero-shima and Amoosh Boosh, checking each other to the floor.

What really threw me and Ewzzy for a loop was the fact that the demo at the event was not what we expected it to be. We expected a massive cult of counter-culture emos and alt girls, lesbians and gay men... and there were alot of them, but it attracted over 4000 people from all different walks of life.

Maybe it was the funnel cake? It definitely wasn't the color commentary guys. Here's the thing, when you have a two-man announcer team, you need a straight man and a color man, Like Good Ol' JR and Jerry "The King" Lawler. These guys kept screaming and telling us to buy Naptown Barrel Roll - Yagermeister and Root Beer (a foul tasting concoction, I'm sure.)

I took some pictures on my camera... most of which came out blurry... My shaky hands didn't things any. I guess that means it's time to upgrade to a DSLR... Maybe once I have a couple checks in the bank I go snag one.

The next roller derby event in Indy is in January... I will totally be there.

Craig Ferguson's Doctor Who Cold Open

Craig Ferguson on the Uber Late Late Show on CBS is a big fan of Doctor Who. Well, he darn well should be, growing up in Scotland. He was so excited to interview the current doctor, Matt Smith, that he did a lead up to the interview with a whole monologue about Daleks.

The night of the Doctor Who special, the Cold Open which featured a dance number to the original tune was blocked by the CBS legal department because they said they didn't have the rights to play the theme. But thanks to youtube, the original cold open leaked. It's funny, but it isn't the greatest thing ever. It wouldn't besmirch the Doctor Who theme song or it's legacy. See for yourself.

I love Chris Hardwick, who was the other guest of the Late Late show. And when he came back out during Matt Smith's interview it turned into one of the funniest moments.Check out the whole interview and Matt's goofy dances.

A Very Doctor Who Christmas

I love to talk with people about Doctor Who. For the longest time I was the only person in my set of friends who watched it, but slowly they began to wise up and they are now all hooked. One of my favorite things that they do is a Christmas special every year. The first special since the 2005 revival introduced us to Torchwood and David Tennant's first full appearance as the Doctor. Even Kylie Minogue was in a special, where a spaceship version of the Titanic is plummeting to Earth.

This year is no different. This Christmas we'll be seeing The Doctor, Amy and Rory together in A Christmas Carol (Doctor Whostyle.) This special features Dumbledore himself, Michael Gambon as a very lonely man (sound familiar?)

Now what's great about this special for us in US is it will actually be show on Christmas day. Until now we've only been able to see Christmas specials months after it's release. So check out the trailer for A Christmas Carol, premiering Christmas Night.

Which is your favorite Doctor Who Christmas Special? I think mine has to be The End of Time Parts I & II. Sure part two came out on New Years, but hey... it counts as a holiday special.

It's that time of year again. Christmas is a few weeks away, shopping season is in full effect. Dish Network has added holiday music channels to the TV ticker. Yet Another Reason to Love Community

So I think I've established my love for Community, and all things Community. Look at their body of worth: They've done an episode based on mafia movies like Goodfellas, Casino and Godfather. They did an episode devoted to paintball that referenced zombie apocalypses and disaster movies; as well as a Halloween zombie outbreak. And two weeks ago they did an episode which was devoted to bottle episodes and was confined to their study room. These episodes just go to show that this show may be the most underrated scripted comedy on television (I say that instead of sit-com because there's no laugh track - I'm talking about you The Big Bang Theory.) What I'm excited for is their next Community Christmas, an homage to classic stop-motion claymation specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Here's the premise of the soon to be instant classic:

When Abed (Danny Pudi) wakes up in stop-motion animation, he takes it as a sign that he and the group must re-discover the meaning of Christmas. Meanwhile, Jeff (Joel McHale) and Britta (Gillian Jacobs) become growingly concerned about Abed’s mental health and enlist the help of Professor Duncan (John Oliver). The group undergoes hypnosis to explore Abed’s winter wonderland and soon unravel the truth behind Abed’s madness.

Here's an example of what makes Community so darn entertaining. Abed, who could definitely have Aspergers, has been charting the behavior of the females of the group.

Now here's my quick rant of the week. NBC decided to keep Community at the 8pm time slot opposite The Big Bang Theory. The problem with this is they have painted a very large target on the show's back, because even though Community is brilliant a lot of the time, it doesn't have the dedicated following of TBBT. I'm forced to pick and choose which show to watch live and what to watch on the DVR. I pray that Community gets a third season and if it does, I hope they put it in a different timeslot where it won't be drowned by a ratings juggernaut.

Tron: Legacy - On the Grid

So Tron Legacy is about a month away and they have definitely stepped up advertising for it. A few weeks ago Daft Punk released a music video for their song Derezzed, and a third trailer was released recently that gives an idea of the plot to the movie. I for one and very excited to see it, and with the new non-sickmaking 3D technology I think it will be amazing. On the Facingbook they've gone a step further when it comes to viral marketing (pun intended?) for the movie. There is a facebook app that allows you to map your own face into a movie trailer. All you need is a picture of yourself; which can easily be done with a webcam but can also be taken from a picture off your facebook profile or your computer. After a minute or so you're put in the trailer... and it works really well. You even have the option of saving the movie to your hard drive, which I immediately did and posted it to youtube (gotta increase the traffic any way you can.)

Holy Crap The Walking Dead Leaked!

So, I can't wait for Halloween, not for the candy or the creepy parents who give out mini bags of popcorn instead of candy (Yes mom, I'm talking about you.) I'm really excited for The Walking Dead on AMC. I love Robert Kirkman's comic about a sheriff fighting his way through zombie hordes to his family. Here's the problem, the pilot was leaked on the internet after people were given copies to give advanced reviews. I have no problems with people who leak things to the web; personally I probably wouldn't be watching Fringe if I hadn't seen the pilot two months before the premiere. But my problem with this particular pilot leak is I reeeally want to see it, but I had a whole Halloween night planned around the Walking Dead and zombies.

Jackass the 3rd: This Time, They're Pissed Off.

The advent of real genuine 3D has brought forth the most un-3D-esque movie to date. Jackass has always been grounded by the sense of cheapness with their use of handicams and long unedited shots of mayhem. What makes their foray into 3D so amazing is the combination of the Jackass mentality towards shooting things from certain perspectives mixed with the addition of the new wave of 3D cameras. Seeing how the two coexist will make for an interesting movie experience to say the least. And hopefully you have no problems with male genitalia and gratuitous amounts of poo.

I love Red Dead Redemption for what it is, a highly-rendered open world Western movie universe. Until recently the DLC for Red Dead has been to better the multiplayer aspect of the game. But now Rockstar Games (or R* if you want to be hip) has released a trailer for the next download. ZOMBIES!! A standalone story focusing on zombies of all kinds in the wild wild west. I cannot wait for Undead Nightmare, the download for Red Dead Redemption

There's no official release date. Hopefully it will be released before Halloween.

Another Reason to Love Community

Community is back and in full effect, already having great guest appearances from Drew Carey, Betty White and Rob Corddry, and they've quietly released the soundtrack of the first season. I'm so excited for the television adaptation of Kirkman's Walking Dead. The trailer for the premiere looked amazing but recently a fan-made opening credits sequence hit the web. If the show didn't have an opening, I think they found it. I know where I'll be on Halloween.

Community Countdown: One WEEK Away

We're one week away from season 2 of Community and I'm so excited. In anticipation of the premiere I've been watching a few episodes a day. Also I've been watching some old Derrick Comedy videos on youtube. The only problem about the premiere is that Community is now going up against Big Bang Theory on Thursdays. Troy and Abed are my favorite characters and Donald Glover is just plain hilarious. Enjoy.

Doctor Meets Doctor

I'm a huge Doctor Who fan, following it and Torchwood religiously since Christopher Eccleston's run. I love David Tennant's run as the Doctor, so much so that I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried a little during his regeneration. Matt Smith has definitely settled into the role, complete with his own individual style and mannerisms. One of my favorite websites devoted to comic book art Comic Twart focused on Doctor Who, one of the best pictures of the week came from Evan "Doc: Shaner.

What I love about this picture of the Two Doctors is the characteristics of Matt Smith's Doctor, complete with Fez and Dot-Eyes. He reminds me of Billy Batson and Captain Marvel. The reactions of Rose and Amy are funny too...
