My Big Movie Year and Top Ten Movies of 2012

Happy New Year to all... I've decided to end the year the way it began, out at the pictures. I considered this my big movie year and now that it's come to close I thought it was time for a last minute tally of the movies I've seen this year. Starting in January I went to the movies every month and in some cases multiple times. 2011 wasn't my best year to say the least, and the need for an escape was almost immediate when I rang in 2012. So here's a list of all the movies I've seen in the past year... you'll see why I call it my Big Movie Year.

  • The Grey
  • John Carter
  • Safe House
  • The Hobbit in High Frame Rate
  • Battle Royale
  • Seven Psychopaths
  • Wrath of the Titans
  • Project X
  • Chronicle
  • The Hunger Games
  • The Cabin in the Woods - 2x
  • Cloud Atlas
  • Argo
  • Prometheus - 3x
  • The Dark Knight Rises - 2x (Including Batman Begins and The Dark Knight in mightnight movie premiere)
  • Avengers - 5x (Including midnight premiere after Marvel Movie Marathon: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America)
  • The Amazing Spider-Man
  • Skyfall
  • Safety Not Guaranteed
  • Your Sister's Sister
  • Looper
  • Django Unchained
My Dark Knight Rises all-day pass
My collectors edition Captain America 3D goggles from the Marvel Movie Marathon
Do the math and I've sat in the theater for over 30 movies, that includes some repeated views of some movies. I got to be at 2 midnight showings for two of the highest grossing movies of the year, and had the pleasure of seeing the Hobbit in a new film format, HFR, double the frames and crisper than real life. The Avengers Movie marathon started at 11:30 am and ran until 3 am. I saw multiple genres: Western, Foreign, Indie, Action/Adventure, Sci-fi, Hard Sci-fi, Fantasy, Thriller,  Horror, Romantic Comedies, and Superhero. I stepped into the art's theater in town to see two mumblecore movies as well as a Halloween weekend midnight showing of the cult classic Battle Royale. I saw the return of James Bond in Skyfall, and Tarantino's return with Django Unchained. Django was the last movie I saw this year and might say that it could possibly be right at the top. Here's my Top 10 movies I saw at the theater this year:
  1. Avengers
  2. Skyfall
  3. Django Unchained
  4. The Cabin in the Woods
  5. Looper
  6. Argo
  7. The Dark Knight Rises
  8. The Grey
  9. Seven Psychopaths
  10. Prometheus (yeah, I said it!)

Here's a toast to 2012, and I'll see you in 2013...
